TEDDY TROOPERS: CHRISTMAS APPEAL
This Christmas, Colchester Militaria is breathing new life into British Army history, one bear at a time.
We’ve acquired a mountain of surplus MTP (Multi-Terrain Pattern) uniforms, worn and weathered beyond repair. But instead of sending them to landfill, we’re asking you the public to transform them into handmade teddy bears to support the Salvation Army Christmas Present Appeal.
Each bear is stitched with care, crafted from fabric that once served on the front lines. Now, it serves a new mission: bringing warmth, dignity, and joy to children who might otherwise go without.
How to Get Involved:
Stitch at home with a Build-a-Bear Kit

FAKE Vs AUTHENTIC - HOW TO SPOT
In the world of militaria collecting, authenticity is everything. Whether you're hunting for a WW2 medal, a Cold War uniform, or a regimental badge, knowing how to separate the real from the replica can make or break your collection—and your wallet.
At Colchester Militaria, we’ve seen it all: the good, the bad, and the convincingly fake. Here’s how to stay sharp and avoid costly mistakes.
1. Provenance Is Power: Real items often come with a story. Look for, Service records, Unit markings, Personal inscriptions, Original packaging or paperwork, If it’s too clean or too vague, dig deeper.
2. Age Isn’t Just Dirt: Genuine wear shows natural aging, Fading from sun or sweat, Fraying at stress points, Patina on metal

HISTORY TO THE CLASSROOM
Earlier this month, Colchester Militaria loaned a selection of authentic military items to a local school in Colchester, giving students a rare hands-on experience with Britain’s military past.
The collection included original uniforms, medals, and field gear spanning several decades of service. Students were able to examine the items up close, sparking conversations about wartime life, regimental history, and the personal stories behind each piece.
“It’s one thing to read about history,” said one teacher. “It’s another to hold it in your hands.”
The loan is part of Colchester Militaria’s ongoing commitment to education and community outreach, helping young people connect with the past in meaningful, tactile ways.
IMPORTANT NOTICE ON NINJA STYLE SWORDS
Especially WW2 Japanese Collectors!
From 1st August 2025, it will be illegal to possess, import, sell, or manufacture ninja-style swords in England and Wales. This includes straight blades between 14–24 inches with a tanto-style point and single cutting edge.
This change—part of Ronan’s Law—follows efforts to reduce knife crime after the tragic death of 16-year-old Ronan Kanda.
What You Should Do: Owners are encouraged to surrender affected items between July 1–31, 2025, at designated police stations or knife bins.
Penalties: From August 1st, possession may lead to up to 6 months in prison, increasing to 2 years under upcoming legislation.
Important: Not all swords are banned. Please consult the Home Office guidance to check whether your item is affected.

UK VIOLENT CRIME REDUCTION ACT
The Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 (VCRA) remains a central pillar of UK legislation aimed at curbing weapon-related crime. Introduced to tighten controls on certain firearms, imitation weapons, and offensive blades, the VCRA has direct implications for collectors, hobbyists, and dealers—especially those working with realistic imitation firearms (RIFs).
Under the Act, it is illegal to manufacture, import, or sell a RIF unless the buyer meets strict exemption criteria. These exemptions include being a registered airsofter through UKARA, a member of a reenactment group, or involved in film, TV, or theatre production or museum. In all cases, the buyer must also be 18 years or older.
Colchester Militaria is committed to helping customers understand and comply with the law. As part of every sale involving a VCRA-regulated item:
Buyers must confirm their legal exemption during checkout by ticking a mandatory legal notice.
A valid ID check will be carried out for each transaction.
Verified account holders will be subject to random dip checks to ensure ongoing compliance.
These steps not only uphold the law but also reinforce Colchester Militaria’s dedication to ethical trading, safe collecting, and historical preservation.
